Memorial Day

I know most if not all of you who read this know that tomorrow is Memorial Day and will have the day off to BBQ or just hang out. However, I feel that I just need to say that even those are fine things to do-I to will be doing that PLEASE take a moment or two to think about the WHY you have it off.

I found this while surfing and thought I would post it here:

What is Memorial Day?

Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor the nation's Civil War dead by decorating their graves. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former sailors and soldiers. On May 5, 1868, Logan declared in General Order No. 11 that:
The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.

I know as a military family we know the meaning of this and do not take it lightly. Please keep those families who have lost someone and those left behind and of course those men & women who are standing watch today and tomorrow for ALL of our freedom.

I always think about why we celebrate. My Dad & Grandfathers were all in a war and I am thankful for that and the freedom it was given us. Thanks for posting your finding to share with us.

I am truly grateful to the men and women like your hubby that protect our country. I currently have 2 nephews in the military. Please tell your hubby thank you so much for keeping us safe. Hugs, Bobbi Jo

This year was especially somber for us, as we just found out last week that one of Bret's co-workers from his last unit was killed over there. We have always taken this Holiday seriously, but it really hits home, when you are remembering someone you knew personally. Thank you for sharing your find! And thank you to all the people who honor our troops not just Memorial Day, but every day!
